Kirwin is an independent consulting geologist and holds an MSc in Mineral Exploration from James Cook University, where he is an Adjunct Professor of Geology. His exploration team has been responsible for several known economic deposit discoveries, including the major orebody Hugo Dummett at the giant Oyó Tolgoi gold-copper deposit in Mongolia, developed by Rio Tinto. He was president of the Society of Economic Geologists in 2019.

Ph.D. Hokkaido University, focusing on the metallogenesis of the Kitami epithermal gold province in the southwestern Kuril arc. He conducted research on the El Salvador porphyry Cu deposit in Chile and other deposits in Mongolia.
He was technical advisor to the Metal Mining Agency of Japan and Japan International Cooperation Agency and participated in national and international mining exploration projects of these agencies. He has published more than 80 articles in indexed journals and made multiple presentations at universities, institutes and geological societies around the world.
He was Regional Vice President of SEG 2004 and is currently a professor at Akita University, Japan.

Zhaoshan is Charles Fogarty Endowed Chair and professor in economic geology at the Colorado School of Mines. He worked at Peking University, Washington State University; Center for Mineral Deposits and Earth Sciences (CODES), University of Tasmania, Economic Geology Research Center (EGRU) and James Cook University. He has studied a wide variety of mineral deposits in 14 countries, including skarn, porphyry, epithermal, copper-gold iron oxide, W-Sn and sediment-hosted gold.
